who will then led us in a workshop to build your own 6 ft Sellers Bird
Kite
“Kites to Flight” is a rare, once in a lifetime opportunity to spend a
relaxed weekend with two biographical authors of aviation pioneers of
the 1800’s; as well as build for your personal collection, not one - but
two - 4’ & 6’ authentic replica models which will be a source of pride
and conversation; an heirloom to keep or pass on to your children, club,
or give as a gift.
Direct from the Netherlands, one of the world’s premier historical kite
re-creators of the era of kites to flight - Jan Westerink - will provide
significant insights into what it was like to craft these vehicles of
aviation history, and to lead us through practical hands on techniques
of model crafting.
Space is limited. Yes, we know everyone says it to
get people to register early, but it is true; space is limited to the
number of kits parts which can be crafted and brought over from the
Netherlands. So the first 25 get in.

THE PROGRAM
On
October 16th, the Symposium will explore
the beginning of the science of flight by taking a retrospective look at
Sir George Cayley (1773-1857), the first true, scientific aerial
investigator and the first person to understand the underlying
principles and forces of flight.
Day 1
Saturday, October 16

Day 1 will be a day devoted to the work of Sir George Cayley, with
special
guest, author
Richard Dee. Dee's book:
The Man Who Discovered Flight
is, without a doubt, the most readable and entertaining account of
Cayley's amazing activities. Richard Dee is an interesting, engaging
and delightfully wry author who will engage participants in an overview
of Cayley’s life with an emphasis on his work in discovering the
principles of flight and demonstrating his proof with the construction
and flight of his famous gliders. For those of you who follow aviation,
Richard is also author of a book on Canada’s famous high tech fighter
airplane, the Avro Arrow.

Day

Sunday,
October 17
Participants will learn about another pioneer
of flight, American
Matthew B. Sellers.
Sellers worked with some
very dramatic kite designs to explore the principles of flight.
His work culminated with powered aircraft that actually flew in the early pioneering days of aviation. Presenting
the story of Matthew Sellers will be author Barbara Sellers,
granddaughter of the flight pioneer.
The highlight of this day will be the kite building session led by
Jan Westerink of The Netherlands.
Jan is one of the world’s finest historic kite authorities and replica
builders. Jan’s first workshop in North America is a must for
modellers and kiters interested in the era of wonderfully intricate and
experimental kite crafts
that were on the cusp of powered flight. Jan will lead the participants
in making their own scaled replica of the
Seller’s Bird Kite, one of the
many kites that Matthew Sellers developed in his pioneering work.
